Ideal Settings for a Homestay English Immersion Course

1. Winchester (England)

Winchester is one of England’s oldest cities and a former capital of the country. Its history spans Roman, Anglo-Saxon, and medieval periods, all visible within the compact city centre. Winchester Cathedral, one of the longest in Europe, dominates the historic landscape.

The city has a traditional market-town character, with historic streets, independent shops, and surrounding countryside close at hand. Its scale and continuity give it a calm, well-ordered atmosphere rooted in centuries of history.

2. Durham (England)

Durham is a small historic city dramatically set on a peninsula formed by the River Wear. At its centre stand Durham Cathedral and Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major example of Norman architecture.

The historic core is compact and enclosed, with stone buildings, narrow streets, and elevated views over the river. Durham’s layout and setting give it a strong sense of place shaped by its religious and medieval past.

3. Stratford-upon-Avon (England)

Stratford-upon-Avon is a historic market town best known as the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Located on the River Avon, the town features Tudor timber-framed buildings, historic bridges, and well-preserved medieval streets.

The town centre is picturesque and walkable, with theatres, heritage sites, independent shops, and riverside paths forming the heart of daily life. Stratford combines literary heritage with the feel of a traditional English town.

4. York (England)

York is one of England’s most historically complete cities, enclosed by Roman and medieval walls. Its centre contains narrow streets, timber-framed buildings, and major landmarks such as York Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Europe.

Layers of Roman, Viking, medieval, and Georgian history are visible throughout the city. Much of daily activity takes place within the historic core, reinforcing York’s strong sense of continuity and identity.

5. Bath (England)

Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage city celebrated for its Roman Baths and cohesive Georgian architecture. Built largely from honey-coloured Bath stone, the city has a unified and elegant appearance.

Its crescents, terraces, and historic squares define the urban landscape. Cultural life centres on heritage, architecture, and the arts, contributing to Bath’s distinctive and refined character.

6. Chester (England)

Chester is a small city with Roman origins, enclosed by complete medieval walls. Its historic centre is notable for the Rows — unique two-level timber galleries — alongside Roman remains and a medieval cathedral.

The city has a strong local identity, with daily life concentrated in the historic core. Roman, medieval, and Victorian elements combine to give Chester a highly distinctive architectural character.

7. Canterbury (England)

Canterbury is a historic cathedral city with long-standing religious and literary significance. Canterbury Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has shaped the city’s identity for centuries.

The city centre blends historic streets and buildings with modern shops, cafés, and cultural venues. Its compact size and layered history create a balance between tradition and contemporary life.

8. Belfast (Northern Ireland)

Belfast is a historic industrial city that developed rapidly during the 19th century, particularly through shipbuilding and manufacturing. The city’s maritime heritage is closely associated with the Titanic, which was built in its docks.

Architectural landmarks such as Belfast City Hall reflect its Victorian and Edwardian past. In recent decades, Belfast has undergone significant regeneration, combining historic districts with modern cultural spaces and waterfront development.

9. Galway (Ireland)

Galway is a coastal city on Ireland’s west coast with a strong connection to music, festivals, and local tradition. Its historic centre features narrow streets, colourful buildings, and a lively public realm.

Markets, street performances, and cultural events are a regular feature of city life. Galway’s Atlantic setting and proximity to the surrounding landscape play an important role in shaping its character.

10. St Andrews (Scotland)

St Andrews is a small medieval town known for its ancient university, historic ruins, and coastal location. Stone buildings and compact streets reflect its long academic and religious history.

The town’s identity is shaped by its university, golf heritage, and natural surroundings. Beaches, links, and historic sites sit close together, creating a distinctive and serene sense of place.

For every question (location, lessons, hospitality, accommodation and meals) five stars for my host and for InTuition. The English lessons were excellent structured. As a German nativespeaker I finished with a great boost in my English skills. The support of InTuition in the background was excellent and helpful. If it will happen I will choose InTuition again. And Oxfordshire was a really nice place to stay.
Response from the owner:Thank you Juergen, we are delighted that you had a great experience with our teacher, Maureen. Thanks again for choosing InTuition!
