Sustainability Policy
Version: Dec 2025
Our Commitment
InTuition Languages is committed to promoting environmental stewardship and sustainability throughout all aspects of our unique home tuition service. We recognise that while our core service—one-to-one language learning in a residential setting—is inherently low-impact compared to large institutions, we have a responsibility to minimise our environmental footprint and foster a culture of sustainability among our staff, host teachers, and students.
Policy Areas and Guidelines
1. Paperless Operations and Digital Resources
We strive to be a primarily paperless organisation to significantly reduce material consumption.
- Administration: All student applications, enrolment forms, teacher contracts, invoices, and administrative communications will be handled digitally (e.g., email, secure cloud platforms).
- Teaching Materials: Teachers and students are mandated to use digital learning resources wherever possible, including e-textbooks, online exercises, and educational apps. Physical textbooks will only be provided when absolutely necessary and will be retained and reused by the school.
- Note-Taking: Teachers and students are encouraged to use tablets, laptops, or sustainable paper options (e.g., recycled notebooks) for lesson notes.
- Storage: All records and teaching resources are stored securely in the cloud, eliminating the need for physical filing systems.
2. Residential Energy and Water Conservation
Host teachers and students share responsibility for conserving resources in the residential environment.
- Energy Use:
- Lighting: Use energy-efficient LED or CFL bulbs throughout the home. Turn off lights when leaving a room.
- Heating/Cooling: Set thermostats to reasonable temperatures and avoid heating/cooling unused rooms. Close doors and windows when the heating or air conditioning is on.
- Appliances: Use energy-efficient appliances (A-rated or higher). Unplug 'phantom load' devices (e.g., chargers, TVs) when not in use.
- Water Use:
- Mindful Use: Take shorter showers. Turn off the tap while brushing teeth or washing dishes.
- Appliances: Only run washing machines and dishwashers when they are full.
3. Sustainable Procurement and Waste Management
We commit to the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" principle.
- Waste Separation: Ensure clear and accessible facilities for separating waste into recyclable (paper, cardboard, plastics, glass) and non-recyclable streams in the host home.
- Food Waste: Host teachers are encouraged to minimise food waste through careful meal planning, proper storage, and composting where local facilities allow.
- Cleaning Supplies: Teachers and the school office should prioritise the use of eco-friendly, biodegradable cleaning products.
- Office Supplies (Minimal): When paper or stationery must be purchased, it will be recycled/FSC-certified or made from sustainable materials.
4. Transportation and Travel
Given the nature of home tuition, student and teacher travel is often integral, but we aim to minimise its impact.
- Teacher Travel: Teachers are encouraged to use public transport, cycle, or walk for any necessary travel (e.g., school meetings, outings). Where car use is unavoidable, carpooling is recommended.
- Student Excursions: Planned student activities should prioritise locations accessible via public transport or on foot. Teachers are encouraged to introduce students to local, low-carbon travel options.
- Remote Work: Administrative staff and relevant teachers are encouraged to work remotely to reduce commuting emissions.
5. Social and Cultural Sustainability
Sustainability extends beyond the environment to encompass the well-being and integration of our community.
- Local Economy: We encourage host teachers to source food and supplies locally (e.g., farmer's markets, independent shops) to support the local economy and reduce food miles.
- Cultural Exchange: We promote respectful and enriching cultural exchange, ensuring students understand and value the local customs and environment of the host country.
- Fair Employment: We ensure fair contracts, pay, and professional development for all our teachers and staff.
Implementation and Review
- Communication: This policy will be shared with all staff, host teachers, and students upon enrolment/joining.
- Training: New host teachers will receive guidance on implementing the policy, particularly regarding waste management and energy conservation.
- Monitoring: The school management will review the effectiveness of this policy annually and update guidelines to reflect best practices and improvements in technology.
